The widening circle of retired generals who have stepped forward to call for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's resignation is shaping up as an unusual outcry that could pose a significant challenge to Mr. Rumsfeld's leadership, current and former generals said on Thursday.

“I do not believe Secretary Rumsfeld is the right person to fight that war based on his absolute failures in managing the war against Saddam in Iraq," [said] Maj. Gen. Charles H. Swannack Jr., who led troops on the ground in Iraq as recently as 2004 as the commander of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division. On Thursday, [Swannack] became the fifth retired senior general in recent days to call publicly for Mr. Rumsfeld's ouster.

"Are the floodgates opening?" asked one retired Army general, who drew a connection between the complaints and the fact that President Bush's second term ends in less than three years. "The tide is changing, and folks are seeing the end of this administration."

More Retired Generals Call for Rumsfeld's Resignation

These are profound shifts that will undoubtedly put traditional, white-hat heroes that rule in bull markets on the sidelines for some time to come.
The Elliott Wave Financial Forecast, March 2001

George Bush and his closest advisors fit the model of  uncomplicated white-hat, cowboy heroes that EWI has classified as the prototype of a bull market . With that in mind, compare the story above about the suddenly open rebellion against Bush’s Secretary of Defense with this story from  April 20, 2003, when the Dow Jones Industrial average was in the midst of a powerful surge.

Rumsfeld Stands Tall After Iraq Victory
Donald H. Rumsfeld stands astride the military establishment as few defense secretaries ever have.
The Washington Post, April 20, 2003

President Bush leapt to Rumsfeld’s defense, but that may hurt more than it helps. As we’ve noted here previously, Bush’s own popularity is sinking fast. Here’s the latest sign that anti-Bush sentiment is amping up:

Neil Young Records "Impeach the President" Song
Neil Young recently recorded a song in California with a very reportorial feel to it. It’s called “Impeach the President.”

Apparently it was recorded with a 100-voice choir.

Last Friday, Alicia Morgan, a Sherman Oaks, Ca. musician/singer, wrote on her blog that she had been “summoned” to a local studio to sing on the new record with 99 others. “I'm not going to give the whole thing away, but the first line of one of the songs was ‘Let's impeach the President for lyin'!’ The session was like being at a 12-hour peace rally. Every time new lyrics would come up on the screen, there were cheers, tears and applause. It was a spiritual experience. I can't believe my good fortune at being a part of this.”

It should be out in 6 to 8 weeks. If the Dow is in full retreat by then, it'll be a hit.
