Bush Hails Jamestown's Humble Beginnings
President Bush, who is fond of promoting the endurance of freedom, made a pilgrimage Sunday to the settlement where the nation began to take shape centuries ago in swampland.

Bush came to honor the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, America's first permanent English colony. It began in 1607 as a grueling commercial venture, and over time, became a starting point of representative government, free enterprise and cultural diversity.

"It is a chance to renew our commitment to help others around the world realize the great blessings of liberty," Bush told an estimated crowd of 25,000 at the celebration. Earlier, Bush played tourist with first lady Laura Bush. He said he enjoyed being "where it all started."

On a day turned from gray to sunny, they began with a walking tour of Historic Jamestowne, where archeologists continue to unearth storied remains. The structure of the settlers' original triangular fort — long thought to have been washed way — has been recovered. So, too, have tools, pottery and jewelry.

Queen Elizabeth II visited Jamestown 10 days ago, accompanied by Vice President Dick Cheney and Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine. She toured the grounds at length, returning to a spot that she had seen as queen in 1957, in her first visit to the United States as England's monarch.

Four centuries ago, a group of 104 English men and boys began a settlement on the banks of James River, enduring lack of food, disease and struggling attempts at commerce en route to establishing a permanent colony.

Early Trading Post Marks the Spot 'Where It All Started'

Data for researching price trends over the last two hundred years is not especially difficult to attain, but we have to rely on less exact statistics for perspective on earlier trends and conditions.
Elliott Wave Principle

jamestown
This story about Jamestown's 400-year anniversary exemplifies many significant turning points in the socionomic history of the U.S.  Jamestown was founded around the crest of Wave I (circle) that started Millenium Wave Three, as shown in Elliott Wave Principle (Figure 5-3, page 158).  As that book's accompanying text notes, this time of the advance from the Dark Ages encompassed the capitalist revolution (which accompanied the freedom that President Bush seeks to celebrate at the 400th anniversary of Jamestown's founding) as well as the Elizabethan period under Queen Elizabeth I.

Wave I (circle) was approximately 150 years from about 1500 until 1650, when prices peaked leading to the Wave II (circle) correction.  As EWP explains, Wave III (circle) began about 1760 for commodities, and about 1770 through the 1790's stocks.  It's within this wave that the Grand Supercycle period begins as measured from about 1789 (see e.g. Figure 5-4, page 161 of EWP).

The Grand Supercycle start is marked by the American Revolution.  Interestingly its Wave (I) really took off from and after the War of 1812 which truly tested the fledgling republic (intense warfare from 1812 through 1815 even resulted in the burning of the White House, Capitol and other significant public buildings). The Star-Spangled Banner was written in 1814 to commemorate a decisive battle in that war, although it wasn't recognized for official use until 1889 (Navy) during Wave III of (III).  Finally it became the national anthem on March 3, 1931, in the throes of the Wave (IV) depression.  (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_National_Anthem.)  During the late 1960's at the heights of Wave III of (V), non-standard versions of the anthem began to appear, perhaps topped by Jimi Hendrix's guitar solo version at the first Woostock Festival which became a late 1960's emblem.  (See the Wikipedia article, ibid.)

But also note this article's points about Queen Elizabeth II's sharing in the Jamestown commemoration.  She just revisited a spot in Jamestown she saw in her first visit as queen in 1957.  That's when Wave III of (V) was in acceleration mode; now, Wave V of (V) appears to be topping.  It is also a neat coincidence that Queen Elizabeth I presided and Jamestown was conceived as Wave I (circle) was reaching its heights, while Queen Elizabeth II has been presiding as Wave III (circle) is reaching its heights, specifically re-visiting historic Jamestown as Wave (V) of III (circle) reaches for its top.
